That's how I feel about today! As of yesterday, I am officially on summer vacation! woohoo! But, my hubs now has me working for him. I can't get a break! ha! Today we had a fish fry and it was in nightmare territory. No one mentioned drinks until we got there. We had already discounted it $1 a head and drinks are an extra $1 a head. So, now we are down $2 a head. Fish is EXPENSIVE these days!!! And, no one mentioned all you can eat...hello??? Let me sum it up as we were told 80 people would be eating. We brought enough fish for 106 people. 14 people didn't get to eat because everyone but us thought it was all.you.can.eat.!!! S.T.R.E.S.S. If tomorrow's catering is as stressful, I think I quit! ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...you have the weekend all to yourself? Well, first you sit back and enjoy a clean house! :) Then, Saturday went straight to the dogs! It was BoxAR's big fundraiser at Burns Park on Saturday. This year, we donated some BBQ again, and Suzi had two helpers for me, so I got to enjoy the day and not have to stay in one spot. I even got to take Rex!!! Everyone loved him and loved all over him. And, basically, he was worthless all day. He came alive in spurts. Poor spoiled dog is used to the air conditioner all day and the heat was hard on him!! It was H.O.T.!!!! But they had pools everywhere and misters for the dogs to get under and lots and lots of fans. Rex got to see his brother, Rocko. Here they are together...Rex is passed out for like the tenth time that day! ha!
Look at this cute baby girl...she came all dolled up! :)
Rex had a fan club all day. These cute girls from my school came and took charge of him for awhile and even entered him into a contest. But we didn't win. :( All in all, it was a fun day. Word is still out on how much was raised but I bet it was good. The silent auction was big and had lots of good items! Thanks to everyone who came out! *For more pictures from the event, visit the BoxAR blog in my sidebar. After our hot afternoon, we came home and piled up with Stella and took a little nap. Then, it was time to get ready for scrapbooking! Whoot! We had a good group and BBQ nachos (yum). I am officially finished with my 2010 scrapbook and have Jan-April pictures organized and ready to scrap for 2011. I feel a little scrappin' coming on for this week!! Now, I gotta go get ready for Big Bear to be home! :)
PS. I'm having some trouble with blogger. It won't let me mess with my font sizes. Urgh! Sorry!
This is a collection of short stories by John Grisham. Pretty sure there is a reason they were never turned into full blown novels. Out of the seven stories, I really liked one of them. So, let's just keep this short and sweet. In a nutshell, don't waste your time with this one. You can skip it and not miss a thing. :(
It's June 23rd and I am not on vacation YET. Notice to all people who like to say teachers get 3 months off every summer. LIE! (Granted, I will still manage to get a month off - 1 not 3! heehee). Today, I helped organize the science lab at school. Tomorrow is back to science curriculum mapping and Monday too. Then, are you ready for it? THEN, I can start my summer! The good news (if anyone is interested) is that the curriculum maps for next school year are looking good and I think our science lab is going to be awesome! Now, for what to do??? All our camping reservations got cancelled...anyone know of a camp site that isn't closed due to flooding??? We have the itch to camp. It needs to be dog friendly and near water! It's too hot! Shoot me an email if you have camping ideas...countdown to summer is on! :) **See post below for what to do on Saturday**
...I think it's me and Big Bear against the world. One of the biggest benefits of being married to your best friend is that when times are hard, you've got each other. You know Mother's day is hard for me every year and Father's day is no picnic in the park for Big Bear either. We left church after Sunday School and decided to go grab a bit to eat and pretend it was any other day. Then, as we finish our meal the waiter says to Kevin, "Do you have kids?" Kevin says, "No, not yet." To which the waiter replies, "So, it isn't your day then." Ouch. Rub salt in the wound. Kevin did say thank God it wasn't Mother's day because I would've left bawling! I just wish people would think before they speak. And, yes, from now on, we will be skipping church on Mother's day and Father's day and probably just hibernating at home with our fur kids and blocking out the world for a day. Kevin said it best today when he said he was going to focus on what he was instead of what he wasn't. And, he is a very loving husband and an awesome cook!! :)
What have we been doing? I've been in workshops all week. (But a good one this time around!) And, Big Bear has ben catering and just getting caught up around here from being so busy. I don't have a class full of kids but my summer hasn't really started just yet. Tomorrow, I will go and try to get started on the mess of moving classrooms. Then, next week, I am working on the science curriculum. AFTER THAT, my summer will start! You knew I wouldn't just sit around for 8 weeks! ha! As for the afternoons, we've just been hanging out with the pups and loving life. Enjoy Stella doing what she would do day after day, hour after hour!
MUST READ! This is a must, must, must! Loved it and couldn't put it down. I am in meetings this week and took it with me and was reading on breaks. If you love James Patterson, love a good mystery and love the mob, you are going to love this book. I kept thinking it was wrapping up and then a new curveball would get thrown in.
From the book cover: The good
New York's Lombardo's Steak House is famous for three reasons—the menu, the clientele, and now, the gruesome murder of an infamous mob lawyer. Effortlessly, the assassin slips through the police's fingers, and his absence sparks a blaze of accusations about who ordered the hit.
Seated at a nearby table, reporter Nick Daniels is conducting a once-in-a-lifetime interview with a legendary baseball bad boy. In the chaos, he accidentally captures a key piece of evidence that lands him in the middle of an all-out war between Italian and Russian mafia forces. NYPD captains, district attorneys, mayoral candidates, media kingpins, and one shockingly beautiful magazine editor are all pushing their own agendas—on both sides of the law.
And the dead
Back off—or die—is the clear message Nick receives as he investigates for a story of his own. Heedless, and perhaps in love with his beautiful editor, Nick endures humiliation, threats, violence, and worse in a thriller that overturns every expectation and finishes with the kind of flourish only James Patterson knows.
Kevin has been cooking on this grill that was 6 years old, only had one burner still working and was sitting upon bricks. (see the bricks we had holding it up?) ha! After many, many months of making it work, he finally HAD to get a new grill. And, even talked them down $50 for the floor model because it was the last one! Way to go! And, dinner tonight was yummy! :)
It has been a very productive weekend around here! One to-do list after another and that makes me happy....Kevin, not so much! :) House is clean. Garage is clean. All catering supplies are clean. Garage and house were NASTY. So, this is huge!!! I even hand-washed my Tahoe!! Hand-washed! It's black, so we will see tomorrow how many spots I missed! ha! I even got all my stuff moved to my new classroom. That was a chore and the new room is a hot mess, but the cleaning and organizing of that will come another day. Ahhhh....the chores aren't finished, but the big ones that have been driving me insane are checked off! Now, I have workshops/training the next four days. :(
This is one of the Alex Cross series, which is my absolute FAVORITE from James Patterson! And, it didn't disappoint. It even set it up the next book at the end. Loved it! I started it a few days ago but with the end of school, I didn't have time to read very much. My first day out of school and I couldn't put it down! If you love the Alex Cross series, I don't think you will be disappointed.
Here is the book cover if you want to know more: Detective Alex Cross and Bree Stone's wedding plans are put on hold when Alex is called to the scene of the perfectly executed assassination of two of Washington DC's most corrupt: a dirty congressman and an underhanded lobbyist. Next, the elusive gunman begins picking off other crooked insiders, sparking a blaze of theories - the marksman a hero or a vigilante? The case explodes, and the FBI assigns Max Siegel to the investigation. As Alex and Siegel battle over jurisdiction, the murders continue. It becomes clear that the killings are the work of a professional who has detailed knowledge of his victim's movements - information that only a Washington insider could possess. As Alex contends with the sniper, Siegel, and the wedding, he receives a call from his deadliest adversary, Kyle Craig. The Mastermind is in DC and will not relent until he has eliminated Cross and his family for good.
Well, today was my last day of school (except for those pesky workshops next week!). It is such an up and down day for me. On the one hand, I was overwhelmed trying to get everything done. Why I worry every year, I don't know. I always finish early!! On the other hand, sad to say goodbye to my kids. And, a little relieved because they are wild on the last day! ha! Today was the last day with my kids and a last day as a third grade teacher for me. I am turning the page and starting a new chapter. After I have a few "moments" tonight and let go...I will relax this summer and start getting pumped for my new chapter and changes!! Sometimes change is a good thing, and I am looking forward to new challenges. Bring on summer!!!!
*I can't be wordless...I mean, LOOK at those chubby hands and feet!! Couldn't you just eat him up he is so darn cute? Gotta get my hands on him this summer!! PS. Michelle, I swiped these off your facebook! :)
Tonight was the annual crawfish boil for the Game and Fish workers at the Skeet Shooting event we've been doing concessions for...this is our last weekend! This year, Kevin got crawfish from a local farm and they were BIG! (and YUMMY!)And yes, the purge pool was on an incline and I kept having to go capture ones that escaped and put them back in.
I always feel sorry for them and try to save at least one before they hit the boiling water! Like I need a pet crawfish! ha Dinner is almost done!! Woohoo!! Awesomeness!!! You done good Big Bear! :)
