Oh Jethro...

I believe Jethro has a stalker...I'm not sure how else ALL these pictures of him get on my camera in ONE night!!!
I mean, he is just so cute!! Even when he is taking a bush that I had dug up to transplant and is slinging it around.  (I am honestly thinking this whole flowerbed idea is not my brightest!)
Kevin came home and I am on the front porch taking pictures of him & laughing.  Kevin just rolled his eyes.
And then there is this:
What is wrong with this picture? LOL!
 And, then this happened...Haha!
The faces of Jethro!

Just another entertaining night on the farm...

Donkey Play

Remember last week when Jethro was hurt...well, this type of play happens multiple times of day.  I am pretty sure this is how he got hurt.  *Note they start off in Kevin's garden.  Shhhh!! Don't tell!

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

46
It took me forever to finish this book (2 weeks), but I knew as soon as I started it and realized how detailed it was that the first two weeks of school probably wasn't the best time to start a book like this.  But, I plugged on because I had heard such good things about this author.  Here is my advice if you read an Erik Larson book:  Read one on a topic that you are truly interested in.  For instance, his new book is on WWII and I will read it, because I am fascinated with WWII.  This book was on the building of the World Fair in Chicago in 1893.  So, the topic wasn't interesting to me.  It was like two books in one.  I enjoyed the devil chapters but the architecture & building of the World Fair became torturous to read.  Read at your own risk. :)

Summary from goodreads.com:
Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that 'The Devil in the White City' is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor.

Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair's incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody, Susan B. Anthony, Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison.

The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims.

Hen Party

People have asked how we get the ladies back in after letting them out to free range.  Kevin videoed it last night and of course, it didn't go as smoothly as it usually does, but this is basically how we get them back in.  Except usually they ALL go running in and I don't get bit!  LOL!

Tales of a Donkey Mom

It started by coming home and not even being able to pull through the gate because as soon as I opened it, Elly May didn't move OUT of the way, instead she thought I wanted her to eat the grass on the other side.  So, I got her back in and left my car outside the gate until she moved on later.  There is no rushing a donkey! Ha!

The rest of the night was spent worrying over my Jethro.  He is limping and not feeling too good.  I really think the moody mare we call Elly May kicked him and hurt him.  Granted he pesters her non-stop, but she has started giving as good as she gets.  And, at feeding time she pins those ears all the way back and isn't playing AT ALL.  Poor Jethro.  Even Bubba looks worried about him.
I really need some donkey friends I can call when I am in a donkey mom panic.  Thank God my mom has horses.  Close enough.  I may have sent her 3 videos of Jethro walking to get her opinion. I realized tonight just how much I love these little donkeys already.  Can you believe it's only been 4 months of us having them?
In other farm news, Jackie jumped up in the lounger with me to be petted while I was letting them free range tonight!  I can even spoil a chicken! LOL!
One more sleep until the weekend!  Woohoo!

It's a 6 egg day!

Today was a GOOD day on the farm!  It's official that all 6 hens are laying eggs!!  We got 6 eggs today!!  Wooho!!  So exciting!  I was having a irritating afternoon at work, so this turned my day right around!
What is it about cats & changing the sheets?  Simba used to love it when I changed the sheets and now Ruby Rue comes running!
My friend who made me the Cluck Cabin sign, also made me this awesome sign!!  She's the best!
Dirty ole country dog! Love it!
The beginnings of my ONE flowerbed...or donkey garden. You know they are going to eat it! LOL!
Thanks dad!  Fresh dirt is cool!
And, that my friends, wraps up my 6 egg day!
The only problem with having land and loving it is that I don't want to come in until dark.  That means my house doesn't get cleaned, laundry doesn't get done and I am not having time to read! (gasp!)  If only I could stay home... :)

It's what we do...

We hang out at the chicken coop and relax...Cluck Cabin is the place to be. :)

Friday Highlights

We now have four working ladies!  I love it!  Only two hens to go and we will be getting 6 eggs a day! :)

What better way to end the week than a nice walk through the woods with my furbabies (Stella is there, just hard to see).

And of course, no night is complete without some Jethro lovin'.  This boy is a mess!  But he loves him some attention!!
Attention AND pestering his sister to no end are his favorite things.  Case in point:
We play hard around here and we crash hard! By the way, he crashes in Big Bear's spot almost every night! LOL!  And, you know how Big Bear hates them in the bed! Haha!
Woke up to rain today so I expect some happy & dirty donkeys today!  I'm about to hit some flea markets with the girls and see what the day brings.
Happy Saturday!

Lovin' this weather!

Love, love, love this fall like weather!!!  The dogs actually got to stay outside all day today!
When momma got home it was play time!
I seriously love watching two boxers play and wrestle.
Well, today they were running full speed and wrestling and Elly May was keeping a close eye on it.  Then suddenly she took off after them at full speed.  I started yelling - I mean, who knows if she wants to join in the play or hurt them?
My heart almost stopped when she caught up to them, Bubba Bear was on the ground on his back and didn't see her coming.  I thought, "oh, here it comes!  She's going to stomp him!"  But, she stopped inches from him and I got there and bumped her as hard as I could with all my weight and yelled NO!  Let me tell you disciplining a donkey is comical at best!!  Well, she then took after Stella!!  Ears pinned back and charged.  So, once again, I asserted that I was in charge and NO MA'AM!  Then, we had a team huddle and all made nice!
Turns out, our dear Elly May is in heat = moody mare!  Oh dear!
So, it could be an interesting week around here!
Rex is just gonna chill & watch the events unfold.  (By the way, he ain't no fool.  When the donkeys get a wild hair and chase him.  He runs straight to me! Ha!)
*PS.  We were still at 3 eggs today.

Rainy Day :)

Today we got a much needed RAIN and 3 eggs!!  Whoop!  So now we have 3 workers and 3 slackers! :)  I am betting with the cooler temps, we have a full working crew by this time next week!  Exciting!!
These two love the rain and love to roll in the mud after a rain!  They are a big ole dirty mess tonight.
"You don't really think you love momma more than me, do you? Impossible!"
"Listen here.  Cute donkeys & drooling dogs are over-rated, but I'd love to get my paws on those big birds I see outside!"
I could never keep them out of the front yard now.  I love them right where we are just as much as they do! LOL!  So if you come over, you might have an ass visit you on the front porch! :)

Just a night on the farm...

First thing we do when we get home is collect eggs.  And, now thanks to my mom-in-law, I have an awesome egg apron to collect them in!!  I can't believe she made me one.  It is so cool!!!
At this point, we are still at two laying hens and four slackers.  Maybe tomorrow there will be more!
Especially since we gave them a yummy watermelon treat!  Now, they need to give us eggs in return! :)  Big thanks to our friends, the Ridings, who came to dinner Sunday night.  They brought watermelon and today the chickens & Elly May enjoyed it!  Jethro wasn't too sure about it.
In other adventures, on our walk tonight Stella found something good to roll in...and just had to show Bubba Bear! (by good, I mean stinky and it was probably donkey pee. urgh!)
Well...two can join that party!
I mean, that must have been something real good!!  Hope they don't get in the bed with me tonight! ha!
And, in donkey land, I can now brush them both and mess with all their feet so I decided to start working them on coming into the barn.  Elly May will come into the barn, but there is something about it that makes Jethro nervous.  So...tonight I made them eat their grain right inside the door.  It took him a bit, but in the end the grain won out and we have two feet in but that's as far as he will go.
Technically donkeys don't need a barn or stall.  They just need a 3 sided shelter to go into to get out of the weather & they have that down on the other end of the property.  My thinking is that this winter when it gets super cold and snowing, I'd like to keep them up by the house and warm in the barn.  So, we are working on going into the barn now before it gets cold.  Makes sense right?
Meanwhile, while I shuffle and feed all the animals, Big Bear puts his new toy to use and sprays the fence lines.  Our toys now include things like backpack sprayers and egg aprons. :)  Ahhhh...life is good!
There you have it...just a regular night on the farm.  Throw in a little chicken free range action and you got the whole night.  I'm going to be so sad when daylight savings time kicks in!!!!

Little Before & After

In honor of the first day of school with the kiddo's...a little school project.  :)
Needed a table and this one was wasting away in a barn stall...faded green and rusty with a top that had a melted section.
A little blue spray paint, flip the cover over and use chalkboard paint on it & then presto! New table for the library!

It was a very successful first day of school!  Big Bear even surprised me half way through the day by showing up with a box full of different chocolate treats from a fancy bakery.  WINNER!

Chicken Eggs 101

Ok...what they say is definitely true...chickens start out with small eggs and they gradually get bigger.  Check it out.  The egg above is from August 1st.  Her first egg.  Below is today, August 16th.  Her 16th egg.  Look at the difference in size!

I'm easily fascinated! :)
PS.  As of today, we have two laying hens and four slackers! LOL!
Case in point below - egg on left is 16th egg from our #1 layer. :)  Egg on right is today's hens first egg.  Pretty cool huh?
And, just wait until you see the cool egg apron my mother-in-law made me!!  She said I couldn't show anyone, but I can't keep it to myself much longer! :)
